Cantuccini

Cantuccini are dry biscuits with almonds, that can be obtained cutting in slices the still hot dough. They dates back to Caterina dei Medici (1500s). It is said that Caterina de' Medici at the end of lunch offered her cousin Cardinal Lorenzo Strozzi the Cantuccini. For him, however, they were quite hard enough to consider them a danger to the teeth if you bite like a biscuit. So Caterina thought well to make them dip to soften them in a dessert wine of golden color and intense aroma called Vin Santo. The combination of the vanilla aroma of Vin Santo and the flavor of almonds gave rise to an exquisite combination. So much so that to remove the crumbs of the biscuits left in the wine Caterina de'Medici had served a second glass of Vinsanto that his cousin appreciated a lot!
